How do you ask those involved in the business to act responsibly, reasonably and in a measured way that informs rather than inflames? How do you get the facts of a crime out there but stop trial by media and prevent more lives being ruined in the process?

I don’t have an answer to any of the questions but I do ask another one: to what extent does society get the media they demand?

There’s a market for people that want to look at size zero’s in their swimwear bouncing around on the beaches with boys that belong to other girls (or boys), there’s a market for pictures of crime scenes, statements from witnesses or near-witnesses or just people who know somebody who knows something about something, there’s a market for people who just want to read about drunken celebs falling out of clubs or dressing up for their own entertainment. And maybe all of these are OK if they come with responsible commentary or maybe they are not but people buy the magazines, read the newspapers or click on links to the gossip sites. They create the demand and the media supplies or was it that the media supplied and created the demand?Paul Bernalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04328860700793073068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7558636046189251768.post-81731553607649988652011-11-26T08:37:14.771+00:002011-11-26T08:37:14.771+00:00i'm total agreement with the view shown here. ...i'm total agreement with the view shown here. I guess there is two big questions that The Levenson Enquiry is uncovering. The first being whether society as a whole, including The Press has lost it moral compass. The second is whether it is possible (or practical) to create legislation to enforce that. I'd say not and that trying to do so is a backward step.Brian M Carrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07160727424114668043noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7558636046189251768.post-2360549158631513862011-11-26T07:52:02.642+00:002011-11-26T07:52:02.642+00:00Behavior of UK press is reprehensible. However, the press is but one indicator of the state of the country and its culture.

British people (I am one) are not as ethical and honest as they would like others to believe (and the "freedom of the press to harass others" is merely an outlier example of this type of bankrupt behavior.

Sad but true.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7558636046189251768.post-59860148775114085622011-11-26T07:35:40.655+00:002011-11-26T07:35:40.655+00:00Excellent post.
